  • Keeping sentences short and limiting paragraphs to either one or two sentences is critical.
  • If a reader thinks they know exactly what’s in the email, they are more likely to put off reading it.
  • Talk in terms of what the interviewer wants strategically and discuss how you can deliver that.
  • Make sure the reader can tell the difference between a polite request and a demand.

  • Try not to be definitive.  “I can do this” will often come across as less persuasive than “I have a strong conviction.”

  • A marketing director may want help defining a brand.  A CFO may be prioritized with the saving money on campaigns.
  • Use an intriguing subject.   Instead of “Thank You” or “Checking-In”, try “A Few Positive Takeaways” or “Some Perceptions”
  • When people think they know what’s in an email the less likely they are to prioritize and / or closely read it.
